Encomiums, Expectations and Knocks as Gambari settles down to Work

Mixed reactions of encomiums, expectations and knocks have continued to trail the emergence of Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the new Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

No sooner had the Presidency announced the appointment of Gambari on Wednesday 13th May, 2020 as CoS than Citizens took to the social media to variously react to the news.

No doubt an erudite scholar, an accomplished diplomat and a man of many intimidating credentials home and abroad, not everyone however appears excited. While some Nigerians have hailed President Buhari for an excellent choice, others are a bit skeptical obviously not too convinced of the real man behind the excellent credentials being peddled and yet others have already started playing the political card.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on his verified twitter handle @atiku congratulated the new CoS on his appointment. “It is my hope and expectation and those of millions of Nigerians that you will deploy your varied skills garnered over the years in the service of our nation – AA”.

Similarly, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who happens to be from the same state as the new Chief of Staff also took to Twitter to congratulate him.

Saraki wrote, “I congratulate Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari on his appointment as Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari. Professor Gambari is a decent man, a cerebral academic, disciplined diplomat and he is coming in with the necessary pedigree that will help him to do well on the job.”

“The appointment of Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari as the new Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari is a laudable one. Prof. Gambari is a renowned diplomat, statesman and scholar who has served this nation in many important positions.

“His intellect, broad experience and skills in administration and diplomacy have adequately prepared and equipped him for the important job he now has. I congratulate Professor Gambari on his selection and commend President Buhari for making such a thoughtful and prudent choice at this crucial moment”, he added.

Senator Shehu Sani on his part appears rather courteous. In his verified twitter account @ShehuSani, he had some great words of advice for the new CoS: “Congratulations to my friend Professor Ibrahim Gambari; now you need more of Boxing gloves and prayers than face masks and hand gloves”, he said.

Former Presidential contestant, Kingsley Moghalu @MoghaluKingsley twitted: I congratulate Prof. Ibrahim Gambari on his appointment as new CoS to President Buhari. With this appointment, Mr. President has made an excellent decision that we can only hope, for Nigeria’s sake, will bring a marked improvement to the performance of his presidency.”

Gombe state Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya also congratulated the new CoS. In a statement, the Governor described the appointment as a well-deserved one and based on merit given Professor Gambari’s enviable pedigree in diplomacy, administration and academics.

“I wish to applaud President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Professor Ibrahim Gambari as his new Chief of Staff. This is indeed a good choice, considering his vast knowledge, experience and pedigree in administration and diplomacy both at national and global levels. I have no doubt that he will deploy his wealth of experience, national and global connections in giving Mr. President the needed support to deliver on his mandate of taking the nation to the next level of prosperity and development”.

Jeremiah Adesanya @jherrysleek twitted: “For the first time in a while, Grandpa sinzu made a good appointment. Most definitely, the pandemic out there played a part. Prof. Ibrahim Gambari as COF of Nigeria is a step in the right direction, and an obvious upgrade of the late Abba Kyari.

However, not all Nigerians seem impressed with the appointment of Gambari as the new CoS.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode,

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, in his reaction to the appointment of Ibrahim Gambari as President Muhammadu Buhari’s new Chief of Staff wrote a post on his Facebook handle titled: “ENTER THE PRESIDENT’S NEW CHIEF OF STAFF.”

Fani-Kayode alleged that Gambari will help establish and entrench Buhari’s alleged Islamization and Fulanisation agenda.

“Contrary to popular belief and despite his second name, “Agboola”, this man is NOT a son of the South-West or an Oduduwan but a Fulani Prince from the Royal house in Ilorin.

“He is a descendant of Alimi. He is a Gambari. And to cap it all, his brother, Emir Ibrahim Kolapo Sulu- Gambari, is the present Emir of Ilorin”, he wrote.

Another critic of the Buhari administration, Reno Omokri in his verified twitter handle @renoomokri twitted: “Ibrahim Gambari just arrived the Presidential Villa! He is likely to resume as Chief of Staff to General @MBuhari. Just like Buhari, he is Fulani. Just like the heads of the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary and Army, he is a Northern Muslim Male!”

Nonetheless, congratulatory and not so congratulatory messages to the new CoS as at the time of this report have continued to fly left, right and center from within and even outside the country.
